Louisville Water Tower Park will participate in the city’s Cultural Pass Program again this year through August 9. The Cultural Pass provides free access to 38 of Greater Louisville’s arts and cultural institutions for children and young adults to age 21, as well as one guardian. The pass is available at any Louisville Free Public Library branch or Metro Louisville community center. For Cultural Pass participants, Louisville Water Tower Park offers free admission on Wednesdays.
Louisville Water Tower Park is the home of Louisville Water’s Pumping Station No. 1 and Water Tower, which was built in 1860. The pumping station and water tower were designated a National Historic Landmark in 1971, and they are among only eight of these landmarks in Louisville.
Louisville Water Tower Park is also the home of the WaterWorks Museum, which brings the history of Louisville’s water to life. Located inside the west wing of the original Pumping Station No. 1, the museum highlights Louisville Water’s archive of historic photographs, films and memorabilia, some of which date from the company’s founding.
Visitors to the museum will learn about Louisville Water’s contributions to safe drinking water through its innovations in science and engineering. Special exhibits rotate throughout the year. A visit to the WaterWorks Museum also includes a visit to Louisville Water’s active pump station as well as an up-close view of the Allis Chalmers pump from 1919.
Louisville Water’s Education Supervisor, Channa Newman said, “Cultural Pass days are a great opportunity for families to learn the story behind their drinking water. We encourage everyone to come out and enjoy a day here with us.”
Regular museum hours throughout the year are Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Regular general admission prices are as follows:
