River Road Project Progress

Louisville Water’s massive project to install new water lines along River Road is moving along. Work began on March 10 on River Road near Zorn Avenue, and crews have made good progress. Following historic flooding, they’re working again at a regular pace in the area near Cox Park and Louisville Boat Club.

We’re installing two 24-inch diameter pipes along River Road that will end up at our water treatment plant in Prospect.

Why is this necessary?

Louisville Water’s filtration process produces residual solids that must be removed from the treatment plant. The current line, built in 1971, is reaching the end of its useful life, so we are building two new lines for increased redundancy. The system is critical to daily water production at Crescent Hill.

River Road project

Moving in the right direction.

In a little more than five weeks, our crews have installed nearly 20% of the pipes for this project – that’s more than 400 pieces of pipe. We’re moving east on River Road toward Blankenbaker Lane. We’re aiming to finish the pipe installation in the current work zone area by the end of May. Then we will move into Zone 2 which stretches from Blankenbaker Lane to Lime Kiln Lane. We’re using a quick-dry concrete after we install a section of pipe which allows us to reopen a particular section of River Road sooner. Please know that we are working as quickly and safely as we can with this project.

This project will continue through the year and into 2026. Our goal is to finish most of the work on River Road by next summer. We’ll still have other work to do to finish the pipe installation, but our goal is to get these detour signs down as quickly as possible.

Important things to know:

  • This is a multi-phase project along River Road with rolling closures. Only one work zone at a time will be closed to thru traffic while crews work.
  • Customers will not lose water service during construction.
  • Restaurants and businesses along River Road will remain open during the project.

Louisville Water wants to thank everyone for their patience and feedback during this project. We know the flooding and this construction has created some stressful moments. Producing and delivering safe drinking water to nearly a million people every day is a tremendous responsibility but so is being a good neighbor.
